Company Sales Records Shattered!
The Project: The customers of a manufacturer of aerial lift equipment were complaining that the front axles of their trucks were too heavy. This impeded the mounting of a front winch. A further issue was the truck payload capability was too low so they could not carry all the equipment they needed.
The Solution: We took a step back from designing and decided to interview the customers to see what they needed. Then we researched what current competitors were offering and improved upon those features. The platform and jib were redesigned, the front axle weight issue was resolved, and the winch was now highly efficient. We increased the payload by 400 to 1000 lb depending on the client’s selected truck and body package.
The Result: Due to extensive marketing research and redesign, this manufacturer became the industry leader in the platforms and jibs. Their customers were informed about the new models and they were able to pre-sell 1200 units before they were even launched. This shattered all previous company sales records!
Who We've Helped
Real World Case Study: Mobile Equipment Design - Underground Line Puller
The Project: The client wanted a piece of mobile equipment that could pull underground power lines and reach into electrical vaults. It needed to have a quick set-up time and be able to be transported by trailer.
The Challenges: This was one of the biggest tests of my engineering career! We were challenged with a very tight time constraint (only 19 weeks to design and build the prototype), a high number of degrees of freedom of rotation, and portability/space limitations of the trailer.
The Solution: As the Project Manager and Lead Engineer, I worked with the in-house design team to design and build the prototype of the Underground Line Puller ahead of schedule! Crews are now able to get into the tight spaces of electrical vaults, set the Puller up within 10 minutes, and be able to not only pull new cables from the reel trailer but also pull old lines out.
The Result: The Underground Line Puller has been built and is ready to be deployed to pull cable at an impressive 10,000 lb. of pulling force. This unit saves valuable time, as traditional practices take over an hour just in the set-up phase.
