I began working with Corey Rasmussen in 2009 on a prototype design build for one of our patented products. At that time, Corey was a young engineer, just out of college, working for a product development company. During our first time working together, I began to appreciate his drive and vision to become not only an excellent design engineer, but a young man of excellent character. Real World Case Study: Hydraulics

Note: Due to ongoing client relationships and NDAs, some information in this case study has been anonymized. 

The Project: While designing a machine that automatically strips and cuts a 35-foot-long boom to the correct length, I used an innovative design of hydraulics for automation and precision.

The Challenges: This machine had excessive heat generation which caused the oil to overheat. The cuts on the boom had to be within ⅛ inch tolerances, and hydraulic machinery is not normally used for this degree of precision.

The Solution: I reduced heat generation by implementing a torque-limiting pump to get maximum flow at any pressure and modulate the standby load sense signal.  I developed a table indexing system using the hydraulic motor.  I had to “trick” it a little to give repeatable precise for cuts. Lastly, I incorporated multiple safety devices to prevent injury.

The Result: The company can now safely and efficiently have a 20-minute cycle for stripping and cutting a boom, whereas previously it used multiple machines and took over 45 minutes.  This has increased efficiency by over 50%.
